• Saint Helena Island - The Sea Islands were inhabited by the indigenous Cusabo tribes for thousands of years before European colonists arrived in the 1500s.

In the 1800s, coastal plantations were prone to malaria, so owners sought refuge in higher-elevation areas like Walterboro during the mosquito-heavy summer months. Malaria was eradicated in the US by 1951, so there’s no need for concern today. Walterboro remains popular with visitors due to its small-town charm and front porch culture.
• ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge - The ACE Basin is renowned for its incredible wildlife diversity. Nearly 300 bird species have been observed at the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The refuge is located along the Atlantic Flyway, a major migratory route for birds traveling from Greenland to the Caribbean and South America.
• Jacksonboro - During the Revolutionary War, Jacksonboro temporarily served as the capital of South Carolina because the British controlled Charleston, the state’s first capital, from 1780 to 1782.
• Pon Pon Chapel of Ease - A recommended stop is the ruins of the Pon Pon Chapel. Built around 1754, it was located along a busy stagecoach route from Charleston to Savannah. Locals sometimes call it the Burnt Church, as it burned in the early 1800s, was rebuilt, and used for about a decade before being abandoned.
• Angel Oak Tree - The Angel Oak Tree stands 65 feet tall and provides shade over several thousand square feet. Some of its massive branches rest on the ground, and smaller trees have begun growing from its branches.
• Drayton Hall - Many visitors are curious about where enslaved people lived at Drayton Hall. Surprisingly, the staff didn’t always know. Thanks to the Bowens family, descendants of those enslaved on the property, more information is available through their oral histories. It was discovered that some individuals who worked inside the house lived in the cellar. George, a butler, Affy, believed to be a nanny, and Dumplin, a cook, resided in the home.
• Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site - Now a South Carolina State Park, Charles Towne Landing features a live oak alley, gardens, and a mini-zoo with bears, otters, bison, and other wildlife that roamed when the first settlers arrived. There’s also a replica of a 17th-century vessel, bike rentals, and interpretive programming, including cannon firings. The park is open daily, except on major holidays.
• Ashley River Road National Scenic Byway - Continue driving on Ashley River Road for the next 10 minutes, and directions to the highway will be provided. A slightly different route will be taken than the one used to enter, so follow the cues to return to the main tour route.
• Coburg Cow - A local favorite point of interest is just ahead. Look for the Coburg sign featuring a cow named Bessie and her calf. Once a dairy farm marker, Bessie, known as the Coburg cow, has been here for over 60 years.
