- Voortrekker Monument - This is the largest monument in Africa, crucial for understanding Boer culture in South Africa during the 1800s, when Pretoria was the Boer capital.
Erected to honor those who left the Cape Colony under British rule in search of self-determination, these individuals, known as Voortrekkers, departed between 1835 and 1855. The monument is a towering 40-meter high granite structure on a hilltop, visible from most parts of Pretoria.
The laager wall of 64 wagons encircles the Voortrekker Monument, matching the number of wagons used in the Battle of Blood River, a pivotal event in South Africa’s history. The monument played a significant role in uniting Afrikaners in the 1940s, contributing to the establishment of Apartheid. Consequently, Afrikaans remains prominent in Pretoria, which, despite its cultural diversity, differs culturally from Johannesburg.
- Kruger House Museum - Discover more about the former president of South Africa and view a collection of furniture and personal items belonging to the Kruger family. The Kruger House Museum was Kruger’s personal residence, built in 1884, and was the first house in Pretoria to have electric lighting. It has been meticulously restored to appear as it did when Paul Kruger, president of the Zuid Afrikaanse (Transvaal) Republiek, resided there over a century ago.
Also on display is the Presidential coach, a luxurious train wagon. Across the street is Paul Kruger’s Pretoria Church, the Gereformeerde Kerk.
- Church Square - This historic city center of Pretoria features a statue of Paul Kruger, surrounded by four Boer soldiers from the 1850s.
The square is encircled by buildings of significant historical value, including the Old Raadsaal, the seat of the Boer government – ZAR (South African Republic). Additionally, the Palace of Justice, which hosted the Rivonia trial following the raid on Liliesleaf Farm, where former President Nelson Mandela was among the accused.
- Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History - This museum boasts an extensive collection in the fields of fauna and flora, paleontology, military history, cultural history, geology, anthropology, and archaeology, featuring items from both the Stone Age and Iron Age. The museum’s collections and exhibits include hominid fossils from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and associated fauna, including Mrs. Ples, a fossil skull believed to be a distant relative of all humankind. Fossils, skeletons, skins, and mounted specimens of amphibians, fish, invertebrates, reptiles, and other mammals are displayed for educational purposes.
- Melrose House - The Peace of Vereeniging, which ended the war, was signed at Melrose House on May 31, 1902, following initial Boer approval in Vereeniging, between representatives of the British and ex-republican Boer governments. This agreement ended the independence of the Boer South African Republic, which included Transvaal and the Orange Free State, bringing them under British military administration.
- Union Buildings - This national monument serves as the office of the president of South Africa. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker and constructed between 1910 and 1913.
Visitors can admire the beautiful terraced gardens planted with indigenous flora, offering a panoramic view of Pretoria. The site has been the venue for many significant events related to the freedom struggle, including a 1956 protest where 20,000 women marched to Pretoria to deliver a memorandum against apartheid pass laws. Additionally, the Union Buildings have hosted numerous protests and historical events in South Africa, including the inauguration of Nelson Mandela, the country’s first democratically elected president.
- Johannesburg - After this enriching and captivating day, the guide will either drop guests off in Pretoria or drive them back to Johannesburg, where they will be returned to their hotel or the airport.
