From Surf to Stove: A Culinary Adventure in Jocotenango
In search of a unique cultural experience, I ventured to Jocotenango to attend the Cuscun Cooking School. What unfolded was a delightful journey into the heart of Guatemalan cuisine, complete with laughter, camaraderie, and a rooftop feast under the stars.
Arrival in Jocotenango
As a seasoned traveler and wave chaser, I’ve had my fair share of adventures across Central America. But when I heard about the Cuscun Cooking School in Jocotenango, I knew I had to take a detour from the surf to experience the authentic flavors of Guatemala. The journey began with a private driver picking us up from our hotel, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.
Upon arrival, the cooking school felt like stepping into a mini museum, with its vibrant decor and cultural artifacts. It was a feast for the eyes, and I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos to capture the moment. The warm welcome we received, complete with refreshing drinks, made us feel right at home. It was clear from the start that this was more than just a cooking class; it was an immersion into the heart of Guatemalan culture.
Cooking with a Twist
The cooking class was led by the charismatic Chef Dario, whose infectious laughter and passion for food made the experience both educational and entertaining. Alongside him was Francis, whose attention to detail ensured that every guest felt special. As we donned our aprons and got to work, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and the clinking of wine glasses.
Cooking has always been a therapeutic escape for me, much like surfing. The rhythm of chopping vegetables and stirring pots was reminiscent of the ebb and flow of the ocean. And with a glass of wine in hand, the process became even more enjoyable. We learned to prepare traditional Guatemalan dishes, each with its own unique blend of spices and flavors. The highlight, however, was the surprise birthday celebration for one of the guests, complete with a cake and decorations. It was a testament to the warmth and hospitality of the Cuscun team.
Dining Under the Stars
As the sun set, we made our way to the rooftop terrace to enjoy the fruits of our labor. The view of the volcano Agua in the distance, combined with the twinkling lights of the city, created a magical backdrop for our meal. The dishes we prepared were not only delicious but also a reflection of the rich culinary heritage of Guatemala.
Sharing this experience with fellow travelers, each with their own stories and backgrounds, added to the sense of camaraderie. We laughed, danced, and savored every bite, creating memories that would last a lifetime. As we made our way back to the hotel in a tuk-tuk, the funnest ride ever, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to connect with a culture so deeply through its food.
For anyone visiting Antigua, the Cuscun Cooking School is a must-do. It’s a chance to step away from the waves and dive into a different kind of adventure, one that nourishes the mind, body, and soul. Happy cooking!
