Explore the Twin Villages of Joal and Fadiouth
Joal Fadiouth - Joal, located on the mainland, is the birthplace of the first president, Léopold Senghor. Fadiouth is situated on a small island accessible by a long wooden bridge made entirely of shells. These shell mounds are remnants of mollusks consumed by humans since ancient times and form a serene shell graveyard, hosting both Muslim and Christian tombs. Visitors can cross the bridge or take a canoe to travel between Joal and Fadiouth.
Port de Joal Fadiouth - The artisanal port of Joal is the largest in Senegal and is bustling with activity when the canoes return from work. Women, men, and children, sometimes wading in water up to their waists, use baskets, basins, and plastic buckets to collect fish from the vibrant canoes. They receive, sort, clean, and lay out the fish on shelves or the ground. Some fish are loaded into refrigerated trucks at the quay for transport to cities in Senegal and the sub-region, while others are dried and smoked for local and neighboring country consumption.
Baobab Sacré - The sacred baobab in the village of Fadial is a giant compared to other baobabs in Senegal. It is the largest baobab in West Africa, measuring over 26 meters in circumference. According to the curator, the baobab is 850 years old, and a small opening of just 50 centimeters allows access to its interior. For the adventurous, entry is possible, but the opening is narrow. This tree has a unique history; its interior cavity served as a cemetery for the local griots. When they passed away, they were mummified inside the baobab. For the animist populations of the time, griots did not engage in agriculture, and burying them underground was believed to render the land infertile. For many years, the griots were placed here. In 1960, curator Massamba Sall notes, this practice was prohibited. As the site attracts travelers, the baobab is surrounded by shops.
Discover Marlodj Island and the Saloum Delta
Parc National du Delta du Saloum - Established in 1976, the Saloum Delta National Park is a biosphere reserve, designated as a Man and Biosphere (MAB) site by UNESCO in 1981. Spanning 76,000 hectares, including 59,000 hectares of protected forests, the main habitats include mangroves, mudflats, sandy coasts, islets, marine environments, and Sudanian woodland savannah. The reserve is rich in birdlife, hosting species such as the lesser flamingo, goliath heron, pelican, and dimorphic egret. Additionally, there are around 36 species of mammals, including warthogs, spotted hyenas, and red colobus monkeys. After exploring, visitors can head towards Saly or Dakar for a delightful conclusion to their journey.
