Ancient City of Pingyao - The tour guide will be waiting in the hotel lobby with a sign displaying your name. The journey to the Hanging Temple, which takes approximately 3 hours, will commence. The tour guide will share fascinating histories and stories along the way, and questions are always welcome.
Hengshan Hanging Temple (Xuankong si) - This unique temple is the only one that serves as a place of worship for Taoists, Confucians, and Buddhists. Constructed in 491 A.D., the Hanging Temple is an architectural marvel, suspended on the west cliff of Jinxia Gorge, over 50 meters above the ground. A distinctive mechanical theory was employed in its construction, with crossbeams partially embedded into the rock as a foundation, while the rock behind provides support. From below, it resembles a castle floating in the air. Inside, it mirrors the appearance of other temples. The architecture is a testament to the remarkable cultural achievements of the Chinese people.
Join the tour guide to explore this 1400-year-old architectural wonder, learn about the history of the three major religions in China, and discover how these beliefs are reflected in the architecture.
At the conclusion of the tour, transportation will be provided to your hotel in Datong (please ensure to book your accommodation in Datong in advance).
Yungang Grottoes - Nine Dragon Screen - City Wall
Yungang Grottoes - Meet the tour guide in the hotel lobby to begin the tour at Yungang Grottoes.
Situated at the southern base of Wuzhou Mountain, the Yungang Grottoes stretch approximately one kilometer (0.62 miles) from east to west, featuring 252 caves and 51,000 statues within an 18,000 square meter carved area.
The Yungang Grottoes exemplify the pinnacle of Buddhist cave art in China during the 5th and 6th centuries. The Five Caves, created by Tan Yao, with their cohesive layout and design, are a classical masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist art.
While influenced by Buddhist cave art from South and Central Asia, the Yungang Grottoes have interpreted this art with a unique Chinese character and local essence. Consequently, they have played a crucial role among early Oriental Buddhist grottoes and have significantly impacted Buddhist cave art in China and East Asia.
In December 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List.
Explore the grottoes and niches with the tour guide, and delve into their history and culture. As this is a private tour, feel free to ask questions throughout.
Nine Dragon Screen - Next, accompany the tour guide to view the oldest and largest glazed screen in China. Constructed over 600 years ago, the Nine Dragon Screen in Datong is the oldest and largest glazed screen in China today. Appreciate the impressive screen and learn about its history and significance with the tour guide.
Datong City Walls - Enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, then follow the tour guide to explore the city wall.
The Datong City Wall, with a history dating back to the Northern Wei Dynasty (386–557), is truly magnificent. Historically, Datong has been a strategically important location, especially during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), when it served as the gateway to the country’s capital, through the protective barrier of Shanxi province, and as a safeguard of the Yellow River Plain.
After the tour concludes, you may choose to end your tour in Datong or return to Pingyao.
