Fly Addis to Jinka (BCO) - Turmi
Jinka - Upon arrival at Jinka airport, you will be picked up.
The first stop is the Mursi Tribe, where you will observe the distinctive feature of Mursi women wearing ornamental clay disks (debhinya) in their lower lips, symbolizing beauty and adulthood. When a girl reaches her early teenage years, her lower lip is cut and kept open with a clay disk until it heals. After this visit, you will return to Jinka for lunch. Following lunch, you will embark on a two-hour round-trip hike to Ari Village. In nearly all villages, you will encounter potters, blacksmiths, and women grinding grain to make the Ari version of injera, which uses maize or sorghum instead of tef and includes dagussa (‘finger millet’). If fortunate, you may be invited to try bunaketele, a delightful drink made from coffee leaves, chilies, and various spices, including lemongrass. Overnight stay at a hotel.
Turmi - (Kangaten) Nyangatom Tribe - (Karo - Turmi)
Turmi - After breakfast, you will drive to Kangaten, a small town located across the Omo River, to visit the Nyangatom tribe. The elders of both genders wear a lower lip plug, with men’s made from ivory and women’s from copper. Young girls wear dresses made from goat or sheepskin, uniquely decorated with nails. After spending ample time visiting this tribe’s village, you will proceed to Karo, visiting the Karo Tribe’s village of Korcho near the Omo River shore. Here, you will engage with the unique Karo tribes, known for their small population size. Explore their daily activities by walking through their villages and interacting with them in their homes. Continue your journey to the Hamer tribe’s small town of Turmi, where you will encounter the Banna and Hamer tribes along the way. In the late afternoon, visit the deep communal village of the Hamer tribes.
Turmi - Omorate - Jinka
Jinka - After breakfast, drive to Omorate, the border town with northwest Kenya, where the unique Dasenech tribal communities reside. Cross the Omo River using a local boat made from fig tree. The Daasanach tribe is located in the southernmost part of the Omo Valley, where the Omo River delta meets Lake Turkana. They are primarily pastoralists, cultivating maize, beans, and pumpkins during the delta’s flood season. In dry seasons, they rely on cattle and goats for milk, meat, and hides. Their dome-shaped homes are constructed from branches covered with hides, with mats on the floor. In the afternoon, drive to Turmi, and if a bull-jumping ceremony is taking place, you will attend. This ceremony, performed every three days, is a deep-rooted tradition of the Hamer tribe, marking a rite of passage for young men. Later, drive to Jinka for an overnight stay at your hotel.
Jinka - Mursi - Jinka Fly to Addis Ababa
Jinka - After breakfast, visit the Jinka museum. Behind glass cases, starting with the Karo and the Bodi, and continuing with others in the next room, you will find cow skin skirts and clothing, baskets, weapons, utensils, body decorations, musical instruments, and games. Mursi women’s lip disks and ear plates, as well as the small stools/headrests (keri) carried by Banna and Hamer men, are also displayed. While some of these items can be seen in Addis museums, the grouping by people aids in comparison and contrast.
Most groups have a pastoralist lifestyle centered around cattle, though many also practice agriculture to supplement their diet. A few groups, like the Mursi, remain nomadic, moving as needed, while others engage in sedentary farming, living in fixed-location villages, with only the men traveling afar to tend to their animals, sometimes for weeks. After the museum visit, you will drive to the airport and fly back to Addis.
