- Confucius Temple - Today, explore the Confucius Temple, Confucius Mansion, and Confucius Tomb. The Temple of Confucius was a site for honoring Confucius across various dynasties. In 478 B.C., a year after Confucius passed away, the ruler of the State of Lu transformed Confucius’ former three-room residence into a temple dedicated to his worship. Over time, emperors from the Western Han Dynasty and subsequent eras continually renovated and expanded it to its current size. The temple spans 218,000 square meters and stretches 1,120 meters from south to north.
The Mansion of Confucius served as the residence for the first grandson of Confucius, a renowned philosopher, educator, and the founder of Confucianism. It is also referred to as Master Yansheng’s Mansion because, in 1055, during the second year of Song Emperor Zhaozhen’s reign, Kong Zongyuan, the 46th generation male descendant of Confucius, was bestowed the title “Master Yansheng.” This title was passed down to Kong Decheng, the 77th generation male descendant of Confucius.
The Cemetery of Confucius is located approximately 1.5 kilometers north of Qufu and serves as the Confucius family burial ground. It covers 1.998 million square meters and is surrounded by a seven-kilometer-long hedge. The site features pavilions, towers, halls, and archways from various historical periods, all set within a forest. Beyond the Zhushui Bridge lies the graveyard, dating back to the Eastern Zhou, which includes the tomb of Confucius, as well as the tombs of his son Kong Li and grandson Kong Ji. Confucius’ tomb stands 6.2 meters high with a circumference of 88 meters.
