Saint George Monastery, Jericho, and Herodion
St. George Monastery - Enjoy a comfortable, air-conditioned drive of approximately 45 minutes to St. George’s Monastery in Wadi Qelt. En route, pass by several religious landmarks: St. Theodosius’ Monastery, believed by some to be where the wise men hid from Herod the Great after visiting baby Jesus in Bethlehem. Visit al-Eizariya, thought to be Lazarus’ Bethany village, and see Saint Lazarus Tomb.
Take a short walk down Qelt Valley to reach the monastery, which dates back to the fourth century when monks first settled in the desert, believing it to be the site where the Prophet Elijah was fed by ravens.
Mount of Temptation Monastery - Continue the journey to Jericho, the lowest and oldest city on earth. The first stop is a cable car ride up to Mount of Temptation, to the Monastery of the Temptation, where Jesus was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:8). Inside the monastery, the cave is where Jesus fasted and meditated for forty days and nights (Matthew 4:2). From the cable car, view the ancient Jericho archaeological site.
Hisham’s Palace - Explore Hisham’s Palace, a key archaeological site in Jericho. Built in the 8th century during the Umayyad period as a hunting lodge and winter resort, it is associated with the Umayyad Caliph El Hisham Ibn Abd Al-Malik. Excavations reveal the remains of the magnificent winter palace destroyed by an earthquake in 747 AD, shortly after its construction. The site includes royal buildings, a mosque, water fountains, and stunning mosaic floors.
Zacchaeus Sycamore - Visit Zacchaeus Sycamore, traditionally believed to be where Zacchaeus, the tax collector, climbed a tree to see Jesus and where Jesus spoke with him (Luke c.19).
Herodion National Park - Travel to Herodion National Park, the palace of Herod the Great from the Roman period, 1st century BC. From the mountain’s summit, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Jordan mountains and the Dead Sea. Conclude the first day and return to Bethlehem.
Bethlehem and Hebron
Hebron - Begin the day by traveling to Hebron to gain insight into the Israel-Palestine conflict. The city is divided into two sectors: one governed by the Palestinian National Authority and the other by Israel.
The center of Hebron’s Old City is a UNESCO site. This tour includes a visit to the Old City of Hebron (H1 & H2) to learn about the significance of the Tomb of the Patriarchs to the three Abrahamic religions.
Cave of the Patriarchs - Visit the Ibrahim Mosque (also known as the Cave of the Patriarchs), where Christians, Muslims, and Jews believe Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives are buried.
Hebron Glass & Ceramics - Stroll through the local souks and later visit ceramic and glass factories to observe glassblowing and ceramic making.
Bethlehem - Explore the Old City of Bethlehem. Walk the narrow streets and admire the architecture from the Ottoman period. Follow Star Street—the path Joseph and Mary took to Bethlehem, Jesus’ birthplace. Continue through the old city to the main entrance, then to Hosh Al Syrian Quarter, view the building’s interior, and enjoy a cup of tea or Arabic coffee. Later, enjoy a delightful lunch at Afteem Restaurant with falafel, hummus, and a typical salad (at own expense).
Church of the Nativity - Proceed to Manger Square to visit the Nativity Church, the birthplace of Jesus and the oldest church in the world, as well as Saint Catherine Church and Saint Jerome Cave.
Shepherd’s Sanctuary - Drive to the Shepherd’s Field, where the angel Gabriel appeared to the shepherds, and see the ruins dating back to Byzantine times and the current church.
The Walled Off Hotel - Finally, explore Banksy’s graffiti art in Bethlehem, The Walled Off Hotel by Banksy, and the separation wall. End of the tour.
