Established in 2001 by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province as part of a coastline improvement initiative, the beach aims to offer both locals and tourists a variety of oceanic experiences while harmonizing with the natural scenery. A 1.2km winding trail, paved close to the ocean, allows visitors to enjoy a leisurely walk along the expansive blue waters. In July 2009, Jeju-si recognized 31 sites that represent Jejudo Island beyond the well-known tourist spots, and Handam Beach was selected as one of these hidden gems. -

The coast is formed from sandstone beds created by layers of sand deposited over tens of millions of years, offering a breathtaking and mysterious landscape. At the base of the coast is the Hamel Monument, established by the Embassy of the Netherlands and the Korean Foundation on April 1, 1980, to strengthen diplomatic ties between Korea and the Netherlands and to honor Hendrick Hamel’s dedication and efforts. -
Songaksan Mountain - 송악산(Songaksan Mountain’s peak)
Songaksan Mountain features a cinder cone in the middle of its crater and a tuff ring, with a peak depth of 69m that has preserved its active form. Once known only to archaeologists, it has recently become a popular tourist destination with many narrow paths leading to it. During Japan’s invasion of China, Songaksan Mountain served as a forward operating base and the last line of defense in WWII. The area is scattered with ruins of airfields, hangars, and anti-aircraft artillery, with 15 coastal trenches below the cliff, some of which have naturally decomposed and pose falling hazards. The site is highly valued for its preservation, with caves built into the shore cliff and trenches offering excellent ocean views. -
