This section traverses the Serra da Carioca Sector within Tijuca National Park. Visitors will encounter not only waterfalls and natural pools but also remnants of ancient stone paving and ruins, reflecting centuries of human activity in the area.
Many parts of the Transcarioca Trail trace former rural roads established between the 17th and 19th centuries for transporting agricultural products. Hikers will observe the remains of farms, sugar mills, water catchment systems, and aqueducts—structures highlighting the historical significance of these forests as essential water sources for the city.
The forests of Rio de Janeiro boast an impressive array of wildlife. Along the trail, it’s common to see capuchin monkeys, marmosets, coatis, sloths, toucans, and a variety of other birds.

The Waterfall Circuit is nestled in a historic valley beloved by Rio de Janeiro’s residents since the 19th century. Today, it is a standout feature of the Transcarioca Trail, particularly in the section that traverses the Serra da Carioca Sector within Tijuca National Park. As visitors journey along the path, they will encounter not only stunning waterfalls and natural pools but also remnants of old stone paving and ruins that tell the story of centuries of human presence in the area.
- Recommendations: wear light clothes and hiking shoes, bring a small backpack with water (1.5L, per person), swimming suits and sandals, dry clothes for changing, towel, snacks, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, cap or hat, sunglasses, and cash for extras.
