• Jaffna Fort - Begin your tour at 3:00 pm from the Gangaa & Brothers Guesthouse on Hospital Road, Jaffna. Your guide will meet you there, providing cycling gear and a bottle of water for each participant.

The tour kicks off with a visit to the historic Jaffna Fort, a 17th-century structure erected by the Portuguese during their occupation of Sri Lanka. This 400-year-old site features well-preserved ruins, including a moat, ramparts, and prison chambers, and was the largest military fort constructed in the country.

Following this, you will explore the Jaffna Library. Once the largest and most comprehensive library in Asia, it was tragically destroyed by Sinhalese extremists during the Sri Lankan Civil War in 1981. Today, the library has been rebuilt and is diligently working to restore its former prestige by expanding its collection.

The tour also includes visits to two charming urban parks in Jaffna: Supramaniyam Park and Old Park, both offering extensive play areas for children and the young at heart. Notably, Old Park was the site of the Old British Governor’s residence, with its ruins still visible. A stop for some refreshing king coconut is also planned.

Your cycling journey will take you through coastal villages, providing insight into the lives of local fishermen. You will visit the renowned historic Nallur temple, adorned with vibrant paintings and sculptures. This ancient temple has a rich history that you will learn about. After exploring the temple, you will cycle to Rio Ice Cream Parlor, conveniently located nearby. Known for its locally made ice cream, you will have the chance to savor the delightful creamy sweetness that is Rio’s signature.

Next, you will cycle to St James Church, followed by a visit to St Mary’s Cathedral. You will discover the rich history of these significant sites. Additionally, nuns will be offering high-quality Jaffna Wine and Nelli Cordial, celebrated local specialties, for purchase. There will also be palmyra products crafted by local women available for sale.

Finally, your route will lead you to a small Buddhist stupa, past the statue of Changkili, the last king of the Jaffna Kingdom, the Entrance Arch of the former Jaffna Royal Palace, and the evocative ruins of the old house of the last king’s Minister. On the return journey to your starting point, you will pause at a viewpoint to enjoy the sunset and capture photographs, weather permitting. The tour concludes at 6:45 pm back at the guesthouse.
