5 Stars! Thanks, Tony!! - My teenage daughters, husband, and I had a fantastic time surfing with Tony and Steven. They started off teaching us the basics on land and then supported us well out in the water as we learned. We were all able to eventually stand up on the board and surf! They let us use chairs/umbrella on the beach for the rest of the day, which was a nice perk. Javier owns the company and treated us really well when we visited the beach throughout the rest of the week. Two lounges/umbrella were about $20/day while we were there (I'm assuming this changes based on the season and availability). There is a bin to leave a personal bag under their tent. We tipped in US$ and they were very appreciative. 5 Stars for Jaco Surf School!

Beginner Surf Lesson Turned Into a Hostile Experience - My brother and I booked a beginner surfing lesson with Jaco Surf School because we were excited to try surfing. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely unpleasant due to the conduct of our instructor, Francisco. Rather than providing supportive instruction for beginners, his approach felt aggressive and degrading. During the land instruction he repeatedly made us do numerous practice repetitions without breaks while speaking in an intimidating tone. At multiple points he demanded we answer “who controls you?”, which felt unnecessarily confrontational for a recreational lesson. Once in the water, the behavior escalated. He frequently yelled at us, calling us “babies” and saying that our “mommy isn’t here to save you.” As first-time surfers, we expected encouragement and guidance, not insults or intimidation. He also criticized us for things outside our control. For example, he yelled at us for walking too slowly toward the waves even though the current was pulling us back toward shore. When we caught waves and were carried down the beach by the current, he then yelled at us for being too far away from him. We were also criticized for how we got on the surfboard — we were standing in water up to our armpits and he wanted us to get up on the board without grabbing it, but then criticized us for being too slow when trying to stand up. Because of this approach, what should have been a fun beginner experience became stressful and uncomfortable. We chose this activity because of its strong reviews, which appear to reflect experiences with other instructors. Unfortunately, our experience with Francisco was very different, and I noticed at least one other review describing a similar issue. Had we known the instruction style would involve yelling and insults, we would not have booked this experience. We requested a refund after the experience, but it was declined.
