Notable structures include the Asclepion, the grand Zeus Altar, and the Parchment Library, all constructed over a century. The Parchment Library was renowned for its collection of books written on processed lamb and goat skins, a technique developed in Pergamum after an embargo on Egyptian papyrus by Ptolemean Egypt.
• The Asklepion - Other remarkable structures from this era include the Temple of Athena and those of Demeter and Dionysus. After lunch, the tour continues to the Asclepion, known as “The Pergamum God of Health.” In ancient times, three major religious shrines and holy sites existed in this region: the Artemisia of Ephesus, the Apollo cult of Delphi, and the Asclepius of Pergamum. Asclepius, the deity of health and medicine, served the people for several centuries, establishing Pergamum as a significant medical center. Renowned medical scholars like Hippocrates and Galenus were born and practiced in Pergamum.
