- Amalfi Coast - Ravello
Established in the 5th century as a sanctuary from frequent barbarian invasions that contributed to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Ravello flourished due to its wool craftsmanship and trade across the Mediterranean with Byzantium. During the era of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi and the Principality of Salerno, Ravello reached its peak of prosperity. Situated above Amalfi, it is linked by a charming and vibrant road lined with lemon trees, characteristic of this coast. Visitors should not miss the main villas and palaces of Ravello, such as:
Palazzo (Villa) Rufolo, renowned for its gardens, once owned by one of the town’s most prominent families
Palazzo Tolla, currently serving as the town hall
Villa Episcopio, constructed in 1944, was the residence of King Vittorio Emanuele III
Villa Cimbrione, offering a breathtaking view
The Auditorium
Ravello is an enchanting place that seems to float above the clouds, with its streets filled with local shops selling ceramics and limoncello juice, making it delightful for everyone, even those with limited time who wish to experience its essence quickly.
- Amalfi Coast - Positano
A vertical city where only the sea is horizontal, Positano was a Roman holiday destination and is the first city of the renowned Amalfi Coast. Approaching by car, it appears as if Positano emerges from the rock each morning, though it has stood for millennia. Only by descending to the center can one truly appreciate its uniqueness. The road has a single direction due to the town’s compact size, and the narrow alleys overlooking the sea are perfect for photography enthusiasts. From Piazza dei Mulini, descending towards the beach, visitors reach the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, located just meters from the shore, offering a spectacular view. Other attractions include the newly opened Roman archaeological museum, featuring two crypts and frescoes in the imperial style, the only example of Roman villa wall paintings on the Amalfi Coast. In the late Middle Ages, the coast was fortified with watchtowers; the oldest is the Torre della Banca, with its cylindrical shape typical of the Angevin era, dating to the 13th century. Between Fornillo Beach and Marina Grande is the Trasìta Tower, dating to the viceregal age, sold in 1817 and now privately owned. One of Positano’s most popular activities is the Path of the Gods, a walking trail on rustic and rocky roads, starting from Bomerano and ending in the upper part of Positano.
- Amalfi Coast - Amalfi
Founded by the Romans, Amalfi became the first maritime republic in the ninth century, competing for Mediterranean dominance with other powers like Genoa, Pisa, and Venice. In the eleventh century, Amalfi reached its zenith, followed by its decline due to Norman conquests and later looting by the Pisans. In 1343, a tidal wave caused by a storm destroyed much of the city.
Amalfi boasts numerous points of interest, with one of its main attractions being the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea di Amalfi, dedicated to the city’s patron saint. The cathedral, in full Arabian and Sicilian style, is accompanied by various other churches from different eras, forming a complex. The city also has a rich history in the paper industry, renowned worldwide for its high-quality paper produced using medieval techniques. The Paper Museum in the city offers a unique opportunity to explore the tradition of Amalfi’s precious paper. Annually, a crew of Amalfi rowers participates in the traditional regatta of the ancient maritime republics, competing against Venice, Pisa, and Genoa.
