- Trevi Fountain - The Trevi Fountain is among Rome’s largest monuments and a top attraction due to its stunning beauty. Its origins trace back to Emperor Augustus’s era, serving as the endpoint of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct from the 1st century BC. The current fountain, however, was designed in the 17th century by architect Nicola Salvi under Pope Clement XII’s commission, featuring an ocean allegory led by Neptune.
- Pantheon - The Pantheon of Agrippa is a must-visit in Rome, being the best-preserved structure from Ancient Rome. Its preservation is credited to Pope Bonifacio IV, who converted it into a church for Christian martyrs in the early 7th century.
- Castel Sant’Angelo - Located on the Tiber’s right bank near the Vatican, Castel Sant’Angelo is a 2nd-century fortress initially designed by Emperor Hadrian as a family mausoleum. It later became a military stronghold and papal residence during turbulent times. It was believed that conquering Rome was impossible without capturing Castel Sant’Angelo.
- Complesso del Vittoriano - Known as “Vittoriale,” the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II is a grand white marble structure honoring the nation and monarch post-Italy’s reunification. Initially, Romans disliked it for its size and style, but it is now a favorite among visitors. It houses the Central Museum of the Risorgimento, the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with an eternal flame honoring fallen soldiers.
Note: The Vittoriano complex will not be entered.
- Trinita dei Monti - Although not a traditional monument, the 138-step Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti is a major tourist draw in Rome. It links Piazza di Spagna, home to the Spanish embassy to the Holy See since the 1600s, to the French church of Trinità dei Monti, offering a stunning view over Rome’s rooftops.
- Terrazza del Gianicolo - The Gianicolo, often called Rome’s eighth hill, is a delightful walking spot with breathtaking city views. It gained popularity for its significant historical role in defending the city.
