Superb - We just got back from Taste My Sicily food school and couldn’t have been more pleased with our experience. This is the first cooking class my husband and I have ever taken. Sorprendente! Amazing! We were the only two who signed up for the class on this date and time. Great for us that the class was still offered and not cancelled. We felt right at home the moment we were greeted until the time we left. Both the owner and another chef (if only I could remember their names) guided us through four separate recipes with patience and expertise. They explained all the local dishes and ingredients during the prep period. The kitchen was clean and the ingredients were fresh. We got to enjoy the fruits of our labor afterwards, sitting down to enjoy our meal. We were stuffed and very satisfied. Wine is offered throughout and the meal was topped off either home made limoncello. Both chefs gave us an experience we will never forget. The owner couldn’t have been sweeter and even called a taxi for us to get back to the cruise port. Anyone looking for something to do in Catania or Sicily should experience this class.

Superficial, uninformative, and largely a waste of time. Unacceptably low value for the price. - This "cooking class" took place at a storefront cooking school, which proved to be a one-room operation. Our class consisted of 17 individuals squeezed into a space with 4 workstations for those taking the class, and a separate area for the instructors/chefs. There was barely room to turn around, and collisions between participants were frequent. The space became uncomfortably warm because although the AC was on, it was not adequate for the space. We were told that we would be making two different pasta dishes, bruschetta, caponata and cannoli. The only part of the class where we actually did anything was making the pasta. We were provided with pre-measured water and semolina flour, mixed them together, and rolled them out. We were then shown how to roll pinches of dough on the back of a fork to make cavatelli, or to pinch squares of pasta to make pappardelle. This was the only modestly informative part of the class, and after the initial instructions no feedback or help was provided (some in the class clearly had little cooking experience and were struggling). After we had made our pasta, it was removed to be cooked by the chef. We were then given pieces of toasted bread and a pre-made topping of tomatoes, oil and herbs, and told to spread the topping on the bread. That was all we learned about making bruschetta. Then we watched the chef make caponata (again, no measuring of ingredients, just dumping a pile that had already been prepared previously), fry eggplant for pasta alla Norma, and make pesto. We didn't actually do anything here, and few tips were provided about how to prepare the ingredients or cook them properly. This is a cooking class? Finally, we were given pre-made cannoli shells, pastry bags pre-filled with ricotta, and told to fill the shells. That was all we learned about making cannoli. At the end, we were given plastic plates, plastic utensils, plastic cups for a little wine, and ate what had been prepared for us at our workstations. Although the recipes for the dishes that were made were handed to us when we left, I don't think any of us left much the wiser than when we came. We were in and out in about 2.5 hours. For comparison, I participated in a cooking class in Palermo that was a completely different experience, starting with the chef inquiring what dishes the 7 participants wanted to make, going to the market to pick out ingredients, and then step-by-step, hands-on instructions on how to prepare the 6 different dishes that we had chosen to make. We were in a proper demonstration kitchen with individual workstations in the chef's own apartment, and everyone performed all of the steps involved themselves, with the chef providing a stream of informative tips and suggestions, and feedback on our technique. Wine was poured liberally throughout. At the end, we sat down at a dining room table set with proper china, utensils and wine glasses to eat our meal together. We had made arancine, pasta alla Norma, eggplant rollatini, pasta with red shrimp and pistacchio, squid stuffed with breadcrumbs pine nuts and raisins, and cannoli, all from scratch (except for the pasta, which was commercial). The experience lasted for 5 hours. The price? Exactly the same as the Catania "class". Don't waste your money or your time here. There are far better options out there.
