Corinth Canal - The journey begins at the Isthmus of Corinth, a slender land bridge linking mainland Greece with the Peloponnese. Here, the impressive manmade canal, completed in 1893, connects the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs. Its history, however, stretches back to 602 BC. The canal spans over 6km, with its sides reaching 78m at their highest. Bridges allow cars and pedestrians to cross, and they submerge up to 12m underwater to permit boats to pass.

Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Situated on the Isthmus of Corinth, the ancient city of Corinth thrived due to its strategic position, controlling ship movement between the Corinthian and Saronic gulfs. It emerged as a significant trade hub in ancient Greece, boasting a vast network of colonies. The city is steeped in mythology, including the tale of Sisyphus, and hosted events akin to the Olympics in Isthmia. Although the Romans destroyed the original city, they established a new one in its place. With a knowledgeable guide, visitors explore the extensive ruins, including the Temple of Apollo’s columns, which highlight Corinth’s former prosperity. These have been excavated since 1896 by the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the Greek Ministry of Culture. It is also a site visited by Saint Paul, who penned letters here.

The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus - The tour continues to Epidaurus, home to the renowned Epidaurus theatre. Constructed in the 4th century BC, it is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics, allowing words spoken on stage to be heard clearly from any seat in the audience.

Archaeological Site Mycenae - The legendary city of Mycenae was among the earliest major centers of Greek culture, with settlement dating back to the second millennium BC. According to Homer, Mycenae was the realm of Agamemnon, who led the Greeks against Troy to reclaim Helen, the wife of his brother Menelaus. The ancient city’s ruins are renowned for the “Cyclopean walls,” named because later Greeks believed only a Cyclops could have moved such massive stones. Visitors can see the Lion Gate, which served as the entrance to the royal court and palace.

Palamidi Castle - Moving forward in time, the tour visits Palamidi Castle in Nafplio, constructed by the Venetians and famed for its 999 steps. Legend has it that there were originally 1000 steps, but one was crushed by Theodoros Kolokotronis, a leader in the Greek War of Independence, during a victory celebration against the Ottomans.

Ancient Olympia, Arachova, Delphi.

Archaeological Site of Olympia - The tour proceeds to the valley of the river Alfios, where a professional guide leads visitors through the ruins of ancient Olympia, the historic site of the Olympic Games. This was the most prestigious of the Panhellenic Games, where Greeks from various city-states would set aside their conflicts every four years to compete.

The significance of Olympia is evident from its ruins, including the Temple of Zeus, which once housed a 13-meter statue of the god made of gold and ivory, the Temple of Hera, the stadium, and the Shrine of Pelops. Even today, the Olympic Flame is ignited in Olympia and carried in a relay across the globe to the city hosting the Olympic Games.

Arachova - The tour includes a stop at the charming mountain resort of Arachova, a popular winter skiing destination near Athens. Here, visitors can relax, take in the stunning views, or enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafés.

DELPHI, THERMOPOLIS, METEORA (Kalambaka).

Delphi Archaeological Museum - Accompanied by a professional guide, the tour visits Delphi, regarded as the religious heart of the ancient Greek world and the seat of Pythia, the greatest oracle. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo offer breathtaking views of the ancient landscape. People from across Greece would journey to seek guidance from Pythia, the oracle of Apollo. Her words significantly influenced historical events, and the site is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Temple of Apollo is the focal point of an extensive archaeological site that includes the Treasuries of the Siphnians and the Athenians, a theatre, and a stadium. The museum, which houses the famous Delphic Charioteer and the statue of Antinous, the lover of Hadrian, is also part of the visit.

Thermopylae Museum - The tour then explores the site and museum of the legendary stand of Leonidas’ 300 Spartans against Xerxes of Persia’s formidable army at Thermopylae, or the “Hot Gates.” The Spartans and their allies drew the Persian forces into this narrow pass between cliffs and the sea. Although they were ultimately defeated, their valor allowed other Greek city-states to mobilize and eventually triumph over the Persians at the Battle of Salamis.

Kalambaka - The journey concludes in the village of Meteora (Kalambaka), where visitors stay overnight. Dinner is enjoyed with views of the monasteries, which will be visited the following day.
