• Corinth Canal - This canal links the Aegean and Ionian Seas, connecting the Peloponnese with mainland Greece. Construction began in 1882 by a French company, halted in 1889 due to bankruptcy, and was completed by the Greeks in 1893. It measures 63 km in length, 23 m in width, and 8 m in depth.

The best view of the canal is from the old bridge.

Tip: The concept of constructing a canal through the Isthmus of Corinth was first envisioned by the tyrant Periander in the 6th century BC.

• Temple of Apollo Epikourios - Situated in Bassae near the ancient city of Phigaleia, this temple was constructed in the latter half of the 5th century BC and designed by Iktinus, the architect of the Parthenon. It is a unique and intriguing temple as it incorporates all three classical architectural orders: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.

The temple was dedicated to Epicurius Apollo, the god of music, poetry, art, medicine, plague, the sun, and knowledge. Apollo was the son of Zeus and Leto and the brother of Artemis.

The temple has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1986 and is often referred to as the “Second Parthenon.”

Visitors to the archaeological site can also admire the Temple of Artemis Orthansia and the Temple of Aphrodite.

• Archaeological Site of Olympia - Olympia, a small town in Elis on the Peloponnese, is both the birthplace of the Olympic Games and the most renowned sanctuary in the ancient world, dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods.

The archaeological site of Olympia was primarily dedicated to Zeus and contained over 70 significant buildings, with many ruins still surviving, such as athletic facilities (ancient stadium, palaestra), administrative buildings, altars, temples, monuments, baths, the workshop of Pheidias, and the hippodrome.

The Temple of Zeus housed one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the enormous chryselephantine (ivory and gold on a wooden frame) statue of Zeus sculpted by Pheidias.

The official ceremony of the Olympic Flame takes place in Olympia several months before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Eleven women perform a celebration at the Temple of Hera, where the first torch of the Olympic Torch Relay is ignited by the sun’s rays concentrated by a parabolic mirror. After the ceremony at Olympia, the Olympic flame travels around Greece and is then transferred during a ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens from the previous Olympic city to the current host city.

The archaeological museum of Olympia houses important findings from the excavations and some of the world’s most significant exhibits, such as the statue of Hermes by Praxiteles, considered the ultimate model of male beauty, and Nike by Paeonius.
