THE ART OF CONSERVATION
In 2009, the remarkable underwater contemporary art museum known as MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) was established in the waters near Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Nizuc.
The Museum’s goal is to illustrate the connection between art and environmental science, becoming part of a complex reef structure for marine life to colonize and inhabit, thereby enhancing biomass on a large scale. Each sculpture is anchored to the seabed and crafted from specialized materials designed to encourage coral growth. The entire installation spans over 420 square meters of previously barren substrate and weighs more than 200 tons.
