Mystical Mornings in the Highlands
Inverness, the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, offers a unique blend of history, mystery, and natural beauty. As the sun rises at 4:39 AM on May 24th, the city awakens under a blanket of clouds, setting the perfect scene for a day of exploration. Begin your journey with the Outlander Tour, a morning adventure that runs from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This tour takes you through the iconic sites of the Outlander series, including the Clava Cairns and Culloden Battlefield. These ancient sites are steeped in history, offering a glimpse into Scotland’s storied past.
The Clava Cairns, with their prehistoric burial chambers and standing stones, transport you back 4000 years. As you wander through these ancient relics, you can almost hear the whispers of the past. The tour continues to the Culloden Battlefield, where the Jacobite army fought its last battle in 1746. The stories of bravery and tragedy resonate deeply, making this a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
“This Outlander Tour Rocks - We took this tour with kilted Scot, George Richie, and were completely happy with everything. He took us to all the Outlander locations including sneaking through the bushes of a graveyard and unlocking the Frazer church where we were able to go down into the crypt!! What fun! Clava Cairns was magical, Culloden and the stories of what happened there was dramatic and sad, while Loch Ness tickled a bit of mystery. George was fun and informative, and we would definitely recommend this tour.” - Reviewed at 2024-07-27
Afternoon Adventures by the Loch
As the day progresses, the clouds begin to part, revealing glimpses of the sun. This is the perfect time to embark on the Loch Ness Tour, available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This tour offers a comprehensive exploration of the Loch Ness region, including a visit to the legendary Urquhart Castle. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the loch, the castle’s ruins tell tales of medieval power struggles and ancient legends.
The tour also includes a stop at the Glen Ord Distillery, where you can sample the local single malt whisky. The distillery, with its rich history and traditional methods, provides a fascinating insight into Scotland’s whisky heritage. As you sip on the amber liquid, you can almost taste the history in every drop.
“A fantastic Autumn tour from start to finish! - From beginning to end our tour with Mike from Historic & Scenic Tours, Inverness, was a fantastic experience. We began at Culloden on a beautiful day and walked leisurely while Mike filled us in on the history of the battle. We could choose to visit the museum there, but we declined. Next we went to Clava Cairns and soaked in the beauty of the ancient stones and the surrounding trees and fields. October is a perfect time to visit Scotland. Cawdor Castle was already closed for the season, so we went to Fort George instead. Next we made a stop at the Singleton Distillery where a flight of three whiskies introduced us to the Singleton brand. It was a gleaming facility with a knowledgeable and friendly bartender. A stop in Beauly gave us a chance to walk the grounds of the Beauly Priory, founded in 1230, and then to pick up a takeaway sandwich from Corner on the Square which was delicious. Mike provided a bottle of water, chips/crisps, a banana, and snack bars in his van. It was a comfortable ride and he drove with caution. Urquhart Castle was next. Inside we enjoyed a brief video about the history of the castle before making our way down to the ruins which are next to Loch Ness. Many visitors explore the castle in its gorgeous setting. Mike drove us back to Inverness, taking us around the city and pausing for a chance to get a look at St. Andrew’s Cathedral. After nine hours of touring we were dropped back at our car. The entire day was well-paced and Mike was a friendly and gracious guide, full of knowledge and pleasant conversation. Highly recommended!” - Reviewed at 2024-10-21
