This museum houses photos of the tragedy, which you can view on your way to Galle. Caution: If you are easily scared or traumatized, it is advisable to avoid this museum. Nearby, you can also visit the Tsunami Memorial.
• Tsunami Honganji Vihara - Located on the coast north of Hikkaduwa, this statue of a standing Buddha faces the waves with hands in the abhaya mudra (a pose symbolizing fearlessness and protection). The statue is a replica of Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Buddha, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
• Galle Fort - After lunch, explore the ancient Galle fortress, built by the Portuguese in 1588 when Sri Lanka was a Portuguese colony.
