Nalanda is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally. It thrived as an international university under the support of Emperors Ashoka and Harshavardhana, who established temples and monasteries in the area. Nalanda was the world’s first residential university, drawing scholars from across the Buddhist world. At its height, it housed around 2,000 teachers and 10,000 monks. The monasteries are constructed in the Kushan architectural style, featuring a large courtyard encircled by cells where monks resided. Nalanda was destroyed by Muslim invaders in the 12th century, and its three libraries were set ablaze. It is believed that the extensive collection of books and manuscripts fueled a fire that burned for six months. Visitors can spend time exploring the ruins of this ancient center of learning.
Following this, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense).
- Rajgir - After lunch, visit Rajgir, located 10 miles from Nalanda. Rajgir served as the capital of the ancient state of Magadh. Lord Buddha spent several years in Rajgir, delivering some of his renowned sermons here. The town holds significance for the Jain community as well, as Lord Mahavira is also believed to have stayed in Rajgir. The travel accounts of ancient Buddhist travelers Huen Tsang and Fa Hian also reference Rajgir. Vulture Peak, a favored retreat of Lord Buddha, and Ajatshatru Fort are two notable sites to explore in Rajgir.
At the conclusion of the tour, guests will be driven back to Gaya and returned to their hotel.
