• Ganghwa Hwamunseok Munhwagwan - Ganghwa Hwamunseok, or rush mats, evolved into a handicraft industry during the Goryeo Dynasty when Ganghwa was the capital for 39 years. The Wanggol mat, a premium product of the time, was crafted for the royal family and officials who relocated to Ganghwa. This historical context has allowed the tradition of Ganghwa Hwamunseok to endure. Wanggol is categorized into roots, leaves, stems, ears, and flowers, with stems being used for Hwamunseok.
• Gwangseongbo Fortress - This significant fortress guards the Ganghwa Strait and was constructed by combining stones and soil after Goryeo relocated to Ganghwado Island to resist Mongolian invasions. It was the site of intense fighting during the Sinmi battle in 1871. On April 23, the U.S. Marine Corps landed at Chojijin Fortress to assault Gwangseongbo. Despite being outgunned, the Joseon army fought valiantly, with most soldiers perishing. The site features the tombs of unknown soldiers and a monument to General Eo Jae-yeon.
• Jeondeungsa Temple - Jeondeung-sa Temple has held historical significance from ancient Joseon times to the present. The journey to the temple is unique, as it is surrounded by the Samnang Fortress, built to defend against foreign invaders. Jeondeungsa houses the Daeoongvbojeon (Main Buddha Hall), Yaksajeon (Medicine Buddha Hall), and a large temple bell, among other cultural treasures. An intriguing tale involves a carving of a naked woman on the Main Buddha Hall’s eaves, supposedly created by a heartbroken carpenter she rejected.
