Also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge, and the Red Fort of Agra, it is more accurately described as a walled city. The Mughals captured it in 1526, seizing a vast treasure including the Koh-i-Noor diamond. The fort, completed in 1573, took 4,000 workers eight years to build. It spans 94 acres, encircled by double ramparts with massive circular bastions. Four gates provide access, with the Delhi Gate being the grandest, used for the king’s formal entry. Must-see spots include Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, and Jahangiri Mahal. A visit to Musamman Burj, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by Aurangzeb, is essential.
