Hekla’s next eruption is overdue and could happen at any moment, offering a potential spectacle. Since Iceland was settled in the ninth century, Hekla has erupted 20-30 times, ranging from minor tourist attractions to major explosive events. It’s no surprise that Hekla has long been considered the entrance to Hell for the damned. If conditions allow, the tour may ascend to the volcano’s eruptive ridge, approximately 900m above sea level, where the air is fresh and the views are unparalleled. Available all year round as a private tour except in spring - typically from mid-May to mid-June when the area is closed. Pick-up is at 8:00 AM and the tour lasts between 9 to 10 hours. The tour includes visiting volcanoes, hot pools, breathtaking landscapes, lava fields, and craters, as well as a hike in Gjáin. Pick-up from Selfoss, Hella, and the intersection of roads 1 and 30 is available.
