- Temple of Karnak - Known as Ipet-isu, or “most select of places,” by the ancient Egyptians, the Temple of Karnak is a city of temples built over 2,000 years, dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. This ancient site still overshadows many modern wonders and was truly awe-inspiring in its time.
- Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - Hatshepsut, the queen who became Pharaoh around 1473–1458 BC, constructed a magnificent temple at Deir al-Bahari, on Luxor’s west bank. It is directly across the Nile from Karnak Temple, the main sanctuary of the god Amun. Hatshepsut’s temple, Djeser-djeseru, “the Holy of Holies,” was designed by Senenmut, the chief steward of Amun.
- Valley of the Kings - The Valley of the Kings is located over 1,000 feet of limestone and other sedimentary rock, forming the cliffs in the valley and nearby Deir el-Bahari, with soft layers of marl. These rocks were deposited between 35 and 56 million years ago when the Mediterranean Sea sometimes reached as far south as Aswan. During the Pleistocene, the valley was carved out by steady rains. Although there is little year-round rain in this part of Egypt, occasional flash floods occur, depositing debris into the open tombs.
- Colossi of Memnon - The Colossi of Memnon are two enormous stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, standing at the entrance of the ruined Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, the largest temple in the Theban Necropolis. Erected in 1350 BCE, they were known to ancient Greeks and Romans, as well as early modern travelers and Egyptologists. The statues feature 107 Roman-era inscriptions in Greek and Latin, dated between 20-250 CE; many inscriptions on the northern statue reference the Greek mythological king Memnon, whom the statue was mistakenly thought to represent.
