Luxor Day Trip: Valley of the Kings
Hurghada - Begin your journey from Hurghada to Luxor.
Valley of the Kings - After being picked up from your hotel, travel to Luxor to discover the Valley of the Kings. This valley is a rich archaeological site, home to numerous tombs decorated with ancient art and hieroglyphics. Visit the tomb of King Tutankhamun, the most renowned site in the valley. Continue to explore the temples of Ramses II’s sons, Amenhotep III, and others, where you can admire centuries-old art and artifacts.
Temple of Karnak - This iconic site in Luxor showcases ancient architecture at its grandest, with impressive statues, columns, and the largest place of worship ever built, located just a short distance from the bustling city. The construction of Karnak Temple took over 1,000 years, reflected in the varied art and architecture throughout this extraordinary Egyptian landmark.
Colossi of Memnon - Although little remains of the once grand memorial temple of Amenhotep III, the two towering statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III still stand guard at the ancient entrance, 3,400 years later. Visitors can explore the Nile’s banks, opposite Luxor, and admire these colossal sculptures. Alongside the twin statues, there are smaller figures of the Pharaoh’s wife, Tiy, and his mother, Mutemwia. Visitors can also view the sandstone panel carvings depicting the Nile god Hapy. Despite the weathering over time, the site still holds a sense of wonder.
Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - The expansive Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari is one of the ancient world’s greatest funerary monuments, rivaling the Pyramids. Built into the towering cliffs that shelter the Valley of the Kings, the temple rises on three vast terraces connected by ramps. Each level features a colonnade of stark, mostly unadorned square pillars. Named after one of the few female pharaohs, the monument was aptly called “Splendor of Splendors.” However, much of the construction dates back to earlier rulers, starting with Mentuhotep II in 2050 BC. Many sphinxes and statues have since vanished, giving the structure a more monolithic look. The cool stone interior provides relief from the intense heat and features well-preserved wall reliefs and hieroglyphics, some still vibrant in color.
Hot Air Balloon
Hot Air Balloon Luxor Take Off Site - No visit to Luxor is complete without experiencing a stunning aerial view of the city from a hot air balloon. From above, you’ll see the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut, Ramesseum Temple, and the meandering River Nile.
Depart from your Luxor hotel just before dawn and cross the Nile to the West Bank, where your hot air balloon awaits. After a safety briefing and an introduction to your ground crew and pilot, enjoy a welcome English cake and soft drink. Then, step into the balloon basket and prepare for takeoff.
As you gently ascend into the dawn sky, you’ll float peacefully over the West Bank, observing the ancient monuments of Thebes, including the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut, Ramesseum, and the River Nile below. The early morning sun will illuminate the East Bank, casting a golden glow over the city and surrounding mountains, creating an unforgettable and serene experience.
