Corvin Castle - Corvin Castle stands as the most significant example of military architecture from the 15th century in Eastern Europe, crafted by the notable figure of the European Middle Ages, John of Hunedoara.
Constructed in a Renaissance-Gothic style, the castle is built on the site of an older fortification, perched on a rock above the smaller Zlaști River. It is a grand and impressive structure featuring tall towers, bastions, an inner courtyard, roofs of various colors, and numerous windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings. The castle is further fortified with a double wall and is flanked by both rectangular and circular towers, showcasing an architectural innovation for Transylvanian architecture of that era. Some towers, such as the Capistrano Tower, the Deserted Tower, and the Drummers’ Tower, served as prisons. The Buzdugan Tower, named after a type of mace, was built solely for defense and is decorated with geometric motifs on its exterior. -
Câlnic Fortress - The Romanesque fortress is the most significant historical building and a distinctive feature of the village of Câlnic. Due to its well-preserved condition, amidst a locality that still reflects the civilization of the German colonists who settled in Transylvania, the building was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.
The fortress of Câlnic was constructed around 1270, featuring a donjon, a defensive wall, and surrounded by a water-filled moat, with access only via a drawbridge. After the Saxon community took over the fortress, it was expanded with a second fortification wall and a southern tower. To withstand sieges, supply rooms and dwellings were built within the enclosure, although they have not been preserved. By the end of the 15th century, the fortress was equipped with a small hall church with an apse. In the mid-16th century, the moat was filled in. - Sibiu - The final activity is a guided walking tour in downtown Sibiu, which was the European Cultural Capital in 2007. Visitors will admire the fortress walls, citadel towers, bastions, and medieval buildings in Sibiu’s three main squares: Piata Mare, Piata Mica, and Piata Huet. Highlights include the Orthodox Cathedral, the Evangelic Cathedral, the Catholic Church of St. Trinity, the House of Guilds, the Stairs Passage, the Bridge of Lies, the Butchers House, the Bruckenthal Palace, and Cetatii Street with its defense walls and Bastionul Gras.
