Explore the untamed beauty of Charleston! Just a short 50-minute drive from downtown Charleston and 40 minutes from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, lies a “Nationally Recognized and Designated Trail” nestled within the heart of a Protected Wilderness area in the Francis Marion National Forest. The stunning Blackwater Creek, a tributary of the Santee River, has been navigated by the Santee and Coastal Plain Indians for millennia. In the upper section, you can admire ancient Bald Cypress trees, some over 1000 years old, alongside Water Oak, Ash, Red Maple, and Swamp Dogwood that provide shade to the pristine black waters. This serene paddle offers incredible opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife observation, featuring Prothonotary warblers, Barred Owls, alligators, turtles, and the occasional river otter. The riverbanks echo the geological history of the Rice era, where historical earthen dikes transition into a flooded subtropical forest of abandoned rice fields, once owned by thriving Rice Plantations. It’s a paradise for nature enthusiasts.
