- Hue Imperial City (The Citadel) - As one of Vietnam’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Imperial City of Hue is a must-visit for tourists exploring Vietnam’s hidden charm. The Imperial City was a walled fortress and palace in the ancient city of Hue, serving as the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty for 140 years, from 1805 to 1945.
The grand architecture was planned in 1803 by Gia Long, the emperor who founded the Nguyen Dynasty. Over 27 years, from 1805 to 1832, the Imperial City was completed under Minh Mang’s reign, becoming the largest structure in modern Vietnam’s history, involving thousands of workers and millions of cubic meters of rock. It is located on the northern bank of the Huong River, facing south, with a total land area of 520 hectares. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, with ongoing restoration and preservation efforts following damage from the Vietnam War.
- Tomb of Khai Dinh - Although the smallest, Khai Dinh Tomb is the most recent and expensive among the Nguyen royal tombs. Khai Dinh chose modern materials like concrete, slates, and wrought iron for his tomb, giving it a gray and imposing appearance.
Initially, the main building exudes a strong Western influence, yet the landscape is arranged to reflect traditional perceptions: a balanced combination of wood, land, water, and plants. Overall, it is a prominent rectangular structure with 127 steps, leaning against the mountain. The side walls feature the largest dragon sculptures in Vietnam. After ascending the stairs, visitors first encounter the house of epitaph. Statues of the mandarins’ court (including mandarins, horses, soldiers, etc.) are placed in the courtyard.
The most notable area in Khai Dinh Tomb is Thien Dinh Palace, which houses bronze statues and steles of the King. The walls are richly decorated and inlaid with intricate glass and porcelain designs. The room’s highlight is the detailed ceiling painting, depicting nine dragons amidst fleeting clouds. Inside the tomb, there are two statues modeled after the King: the one on the throne was sculpted in Paris in 1920 by Ducuing and Barbedienne.
- Tomb of Minh Mang - The Tomb of Minh Mang is considered the most majestic of all the Royal Tombs, renowned for its architecture that harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings.
- Dong Ba Market - Visitors can travel to Dong Ba Market, the busiest market in Hue, offering a variety of foods and goods. Here, one can observe local buying and selling practices and have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs for friends and family.
