Setting Sail in Hoonah

As a marine biologist, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean’s mysteries, and my recent adventure in Hoonah, Alaska, with Fairweather Kayaks was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the heart of southeast Alaska, Hoonah is a quaint town that feels like home the moment you arrive. The locals’ warmth and the town’s charm make it a hard place to leave.

The day began with a gentle breeze and the promise of adventure. Our guide, Cody, a Hoonah native, greeted us with a smile that spoke of countless stories and experiences on these waters. As we paddled away from the harbor, the calm waters mirrored the sky, creating a serene canvas that was occasionally interrupted by the playful jumps of salmon. The tranquility of the surroundings was only enhanced by the distant calls of bald eagles, a reminder of the untouched beauty of this Alaskan paradise.

A Dance with Nature

The highlight of our journey was the unexpected encounters with the local wildlife. Hundreds of salmon leapt around us, their silvery bodies glistening in the sunlight as they prepared for their upstream journey. It was a spectacle that left me in awe, a testament to the vibrant life that thrives beneath the water’s surface.

Our guide, Cody, shared tales of the land and sea, his voice blending with the gentle lapping of the waves against our kayaks. His knowledge and passion for Hoonah were infectious, making every moment on the water feel like a shared secret between us and the ocean. We even had the chance to see jellyfish, their translucent bodies floating gracefully, a sight I hadn’t expected in Alaska.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

As we continued our paddle, we were joined by a delightful surprise—a personal crab trap. Cody demonstrated how it worked, and I had the thrilling opportunity to hold one of the crabs. It was a hands-on experience that connected me even more deeply to the marine life I study and cherish.
