- Hoonah - The journey begins at the dock in the village of Hoonah, where the commercial crabbing boat is stationed along with the morning’s crab catch. Select your fresh crab while any questions about Alaska’s commercial fishing and crabbing are answered.
The crew fishes for pink salmon to use as bait for commercial crabbing. All the equipment is on board, allowing for a demonstration of its operation right at the dock.
- Hoonah Beach House - The next destination is the deck over the water at Hoonah Beach House. This is a brief stop to place the crab on ice for later and possibly use the restroom if needed.
The group will return here later for the crab feast!
- Hoonah - The following stop is a forested private property just outside the village. Coastal brown bears are occasionally spotted here, so keep the camera ready.
This is where Srisa and the team pick the wild Alaska berries that will be enjoyed in the dessert at the crab feast. There is also a small garden and orchard. The team enjoys discussing what it takes to survive and thrive in this remote location.

Hoonah - Then, it’s back to the village to visit friends at the carving shed.
This is an opportunity to watch local Tlingit master carvers craft totem poles from yellow cedar logs. -
Hoonah Beach House - The final stop is the deck at Hoonah Beach House for some fresh crab!
The crab that was iced down earlier is now ready to be cooked and prepared.
Relax and observe as the local method of cooking crab is demonstrated. Most people have never tasted crab fresh off the boat. Typically, crab shacks serve pre-cooked, frozen, and reheated crab, even those that claim to be “fresh.”
Not here! This is the genuine experience, and the difference is unbelievable. Most people say it’s the best crab they’ve ever tasted.
