- Bonneville Dam - As the first hydroelectric dam on the Columbia River, Bonneville plays a crucial role in power generation and fish migration. Visitors can enjoy watching salmon and lamprey navigate the fish ladders through underwater viewing windows at the visitor center. Nearby, the historic hatchery offers shaded garden paths, viewing pools, and the impressive Herman, an 80-year-old, 500-pound sturgeon that is a must-see.
- Mirror Lake - This stunning glacial cirque lake is nestled in an amphitheater-shaped basin carved by ancient glaciers, offering a breathtaking view of Mount Hood reflected on its surface. The trail is 2 miles each way, with a short loop around the lake at the top, totaling about 4.4 miles. Plan for approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. It’s one of the area’s best hikes, popular for good reason.
- Mt. Hood Meadows - Each season offers something unique on Mt. Hood’s slopes. Summer visitors can explore hikes for all skill levels, while winter transforms the area into a skiing and snowboarding haven. It also offers dark sky camping for stargazers eager to experience the stunning wilderness at night.
- Multnomah Falls - The undeniable highlight of the Columbia River Gorge and the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest. The falls cascade down the rocky cliff, showcasing the raw power of nature. It is the second-tallest year-round waterfall in the U.S., with water plummeting 620 feet. The gentler 242-foot Wahkeena Falls awaits at the path’s end. A timed reservation is required for the main parking lot from late May through September due to high demand.
- Ramona Falls - A more challenging trek for seasoned hikers, this 7-mile hike includes careful fording over the Sandy River, leading to the stunning Ramona Falls cascading down a cliff in the secluded forest. For those seeking an adventure away from busier spots like Multnomah, Ramona offers a 2-3 hour expedition.
Note that the seasonal bridge is no longer available, so hikers must cross the Sandy River by balancing on logs or fording the water, which can be hazardous when water levels are high. Always check trail conditions before setting out to enjoy this tranquil and refreshing reward.
- Starvation Creek Falls - Don’t let the name deter you—this short, rewarding 1.8-mile trail features four waterfalls in quick succession. Starvation Creek Falls is just a tenth of a mile from the trailhead, followed by Cabin Creek Falls, Hole in the Wall Falls, and Lancaster Falls along the Historic Highway State Trail. The highlight is Hole in the Wall, where engineers blasted a tunnel through a cliff and diverted a creek to protect the highway below—a bold enhancement of nature. Allow about an hour for the full out-and-back.
Note: The park isn’t directly accessible from westbound I-84, so continue to Exit 51 at Wyeth, double back eastbound, and enter from the Starvation Creek exit. Add about 10 minutes for the detour, which is well worth it.
- The Fruit Loop - Covering the Hood River Valley with apples, pears, cherries, and more, the Fruit Loop connects u-pick orchards, farmstands, bakeries, wineries, cideries, and flower fields along scenic country roads since 1992. You could easily spend a full day exploring. Check out hoodriverfruitloop.com before visiting to choose your favorites.
- Timberline Lodge - Perched high on the slopes, Timberline Lodge is a historic lodge that resembles an alpine fairytale. A year-round adventure gateway, Timberline is ideal for relaxing and enjoying mountainside views or trying winter sports during colder months. In summer, mountain biking and hiking make it a favorite stop for adventure seekers looking for a mountain base.
