- Old City Gate - City gates are a distinctive feature of Hanoi’s urban architecture. However, not everyone is aware of the number of city gates in the capital, even long-time residents.
Historical documents and newspaper articles often mention that Hanoi has five gates, but in reality, there were more. Among them, the Quan Chuong gate in Hanoi’s Old Quarter is the only ancient gate that still stands today.
- Old Quarter - As we stroll through the bustling streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, we indulge in the famous Hanoi street food dishes such as Bun Cha (the dish enjoyed by the 44th President of the United States, Obama, during his visit to Hanoi), Nom Bo Kho, Banh Cuon, and Vietnamese Fried Spring Rolls. These traditional spring rolls, originally made with shrimp, pork, carrot, crab, and vegetables, are a beloved dish in Vietnam. At a local eatery, watch as skilled chefs demonstrate how these delicious dishes are prepared. Continuing into the heart of the Old Quarter, we pass by street stalls and quiet residential lanes, observing local life that has remained unchanged since Hanoi was founded over 1,000 years ago.
Our next two snack stops are at outdoor barbecue stalls. We join the Hanoi locals to sample a variety of meat, vegetable, and bread specialties.
- Hoan Kiem Lake Walking Street - The lake is not only special for its history. The water color of Hoan Kiem Lake is unique, with a greenish hue that varies in shade depending on the sky’s reflection. The lake is home to tortoises, which are rare among Vietnamese lakes. If fortunate, you might see these giant creatures emerging from the water. As tortoises are considered sacred in Vietnamese culture (along with dragons, phoenixes, and unicorns), Hoan Kiem Lake is regarded as a holy place that nurtures tortoises.
- Hang Bac Street - We will savor one of the best desserts on Hang Bac Street, concluding our tour here.
