Exploring Vietnam’s Hidden Gems: A Day in Ninh Binh
Inspired by my love for history and the open road, I embarked on a journey to explore the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and the breathtaking landscapes of Tam Coc. Join me as I reflect on a day filled with discovery, laughter, and awe-inspiring views.
A Journey Through Time: Hoa Lu and the First Emperor’s Tomb
As a retired teacher with a penchant for history, the allure of visiting Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam, was irresistible. Our guide, Sonny, was a beacon of warmth and knowledge, much like the sun that gently kissed the landscape that morning. We began our journey with a bike ride to the First Emperor’s Tomb, a place steeped in history and stories of the past. The ride itself was a gentle reminder of the road trips of my youth, where the journey was as significant as the destination.
The tomb stood as a testament to the rich tapestry of Vietnam’s history, a silent guardian of stories from the Dinh, Le, and Ly Dynasties. As Sonny shared tales of the past, I was transported back to a time when I would sit in my classroom, sharing the wonders of history with my students. The experience was both nostalgic and enlightening, a perfect blend of learning and exploration.
The Tranquil Waters of Tam Coc
After a delightful lunch featuring local delicacies, we embarked on a boat ride through Tam Coc. The Ngô Đồng River, with its serene waters and majestic mountains, was a sight to behold. As our boat glided through the water, piloted by a local woman, I was reminded of the many rivers I had crossed during my travels across America. Each bend in the river revealed a new vista, a new story waiting to be told.
The landscape, often referred to as “Halong Bay on land,” was a masterpiece of nature. The tranquility of the river, coupled with the breathtaking views, created a meditative experience that words can scarcely capture. It was a moment of pure reflection, a chance to connect with the natural world in a way that is all too rare in our fast-paced lives.
The Ascent to Lying Dragon Mountain
Our final adventure of the day was the climb to the top of Lying Dragon Mountain. The 500 steps were a challenge, but each step brought us closer to a view that was nothing short of spectacular. Standing at the summit, looking down at the river we had just traversed, I felt a sense of accomplishment and awe.
Sonny, with his infectious humor and deep knowledge, made the climb feel like a journey through time. His stories of Vietnam’s history and his personal experiences added layers of meaning to the breathtaking views. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and reflection.
As we made our way back to Hanoi, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful part of the world. The Ninh Binh Day Tour was more than just a tour; it was a journey through history, nature, and the human spirit. It reminded me of the road trips of my past, where every mile brought new adventures and memories to cherish.
