Discovering Vietnam’s Hidden Gems: A Three-Day Adventure
Eager to explore Vietnam’s natural wonders, I embarked on a three-day tour of Ban Gioc Waterfall and Ba Be Lake. The journey promised breathtaking landscapes, cultural insights, and unforgettable experiences.
Day 1: A Journey Through History and Culture
As I embarked on the Ban Gioc Waterfall and Ba Be Lake Tour, I was filled with anticipation. The journey began in Hanoi, a city that never fails to captivate me with its blend of French colonial architecture and vibrant Vietnamese culture. Our guide, Loi, picked us up early in the morning, and we set off towards Lang Son, a region steeped in history. The drive was scenic, with lush landscapes unfolding before us as we approached the Chi Lang Pass.
Chi Lang Pass is a place of historical significance, known for its role in Vietnam’s defense against invasions. Walking through the Quy Mon Quan Gate, I could almost feel the echoes of the past. Loi, with his wealth of knowledge, brought the history to life, sharing stories of battles and victories that shaped the nation. His passion for history was infectious, and it set the tone for the rest of our journey.
After a hearty lunch at a local restaurant, we continued to Quang Uyen, where we visited the Mother’s Temple and the Dong Khe battle site. The day ended with a warm welcome at a Nung family homestay. Staying with locals offered a unique insight into their way of life, and the home-cooked dinner was a delightful introduction to the region’s cuisine.
Day 2: Nature’s Masterpieces
The second day was all about immersing ourselves in the natural wonders of Vietnam. After a traditional breakfast, we headed to Trung Khanh, a village near the Chinese border. Here, we met the Nung people of Phuoc Sen, known for their blacksmithing skills. It was fascinating to see how traditional tools are crafted, a testament to the community’s resilience and ingenuity.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Ban Gioc Waterfall. Spanning over 300 meters, the waterfall is a breathtaking sight, with its cascading waters creating a symphony of sounds. Loi, ever the photographer, captured stunning shots of the group against this magnificent backdrop. We also explored the Nguom Ngao Cave, a subterranean wonder filled with stalactites and stalagmites that seemed to tell stories of their own.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ba Be Lake, navigating the winding roads known as the “snake pass.” Our accommodation for the night was another homestay, this time with a Tay family. The evening was spent sharing stories and laughter, with Loi impressing us with his culinary skills and even serenading us with a song or two.
Day 3: A Tranquil Farewell
Our final day began with a boat ride across Ba Be Lake, a serene body of water surrounded by lush forests. The tranquility of the lake was a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Hanoi, offering a moment of reflection and peace. We hiked through the rainforest, discovering a prehistoric cave and observing the diverse birdlife that calls this area home.
The hike led us to the An Ma Temple, a sacred site for the Tay people. Loi’s storytelling once again enriched the experience, as he shared the legends and beliefs associated with the temple. As we returned to the boat, some of us chose to take a refreshing dip in the lake, while others simply soaked in the stunning karst landscapes.
After a final lunch at Ba Be Jungle Houses restaurant, it was time to head back to Hanoi. The journey back was filled with laughter and camaraderie, a testament to the bonds formed over the past three days. As we parted ways, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences and friendships gained on this trip. Loi’s guidance and the warmth of the local communities made this adventure truly unforgettable.
