A Dawn Arrival in the Heart of the Bush

The first light of dawn was just beginning to break as I made my way to the gates of the Kapama Private Reserve. The air was crisp, and the anticipation of the day ahead filled me with a sense of adventure. As a wildlife photographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some of nature’s most breathtaking moments, but the promise of meeting the Jabulani Herd was something truly special.

Arriving at the reserve’s entrance by 6 am, I was greeted by the sight of winding dirt roads stretching into the heart of the bush. The 9-kilometer drive to the event site was a journey in itself, with the landscape gradually coming to life as the sun rose higher in the sky. By 6:30 am, I had reached my destination, where the warm smiles of the staff and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee awaited me.

The intimate setting of the experience was immediately apparent, with only myself and an older couple present that day. This small group allowed for a more personal connection with the elephants and their caretakers, setting the stage for a truly memorable encounter.
