- Traditional Japanese Archery Experience “SHA-RAKU” - Kyudo is a Japanese martial art that involves shooting at a target with a Japanese bow to achieve complete mental and physical focus. The primary distinction between kyudo and Western archery is that kyudo involves a traditional routine that honors both the equipment and the opponent. Located just a fifteen-minute walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome, this activity offers an authentic Japanese archery experience in Hiroshima.
Upon arrival at the archery range, participants will be outfitted in a genuine kyudo uniform, including dogi upper-wear and hakama lower-wear. A brief explanation of the art of kyudo will be provided, along with instructions and demonstrations throughout the experience. With the acquired knowledge and skills, participants will shoot at the target with arrows, gaining insight into the enjoyable and challenging aspects of the sport, especially those related to wearing the traditional hakama and armor.
Typically in kyudo, one is not allowed to draw the arrow until mastering the basics, but during this experience, participants can enjoy the sport even as complete beginners. Initially, hitting the target may be challenging, making it even more thrilling when success is achieved. Hitting the target is also believed to bring good luck and fulfill wishes, even in the mini-sized kyudo ground where participants will be shooting.
