- Galle Fort - Galle Dutch Fort - After exploring the resilience of the people through the art at the Tsunami Photo Museum, the next destination is the Galle Dutch Fort. With a rich history spanning several centuries, the city’s strategic position made it a key maritime trade hub and a landing site for colonial rulers. Initially constructed by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, the fort was later extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century. The original fort featured earthen structures with palisades, a rampart, three bastions, and a surrounding moat. Under Dutch control, the fortifications were strengthened using coral and granite stones, transforming the Fort into a small, well-planned walled town with a rectangular grid of streets lined with low houses featuring gables and verandas.
