- Urquhart Castle - In OUTLANDER, Chapter 19: The Waterhorse, Claire visits the shore of Loch Ness to freshen up before dinner. There, she encounters a mysterious creature in the water, sensing it is like her, from another time. This encounter with the unusual, possibly prehistoric creature, does not frighten her.
Urquhart was partially demolished in 1692 to prevent its use by Jacobite forces and later fell into ruin. In the 20th century, it was designated as a scheduled monument and opened to the public, becoming one of Scotland’s most-visited castles.
