- Urquhart Castle - The current ruins date from the 13th to the 16th centuries, although they were constructed on the site of an earlier medieval fortification. Established in the 13th century, Urquhart played a significant role in the Scottish Wars of Independence in the 14th century. It later served as a royal castle and was frequently raided by the MacDonald Clan. In 1509, the castle was granted to the Clan Grant, but conflicts with the MacDonalds persisted. Despite numerous raids, the castle was fortified, only to be largely abandoned by the mid-17th century. In 1692, Urquhart was partially destroyed to prevent its use by Jacobite forces and subsequently fell into decay. Located on a headland overlooking Loch Ness, it is one of the largest castles in Scotland by area.
- Clava Cairns - The Clava Cairn is a type of Bronze Age circular chamber tomb cairn, named after the group of three cairns at Balnuaran of Clava. They are divided into two sub-types: one typically features a corbelled passage grave with a single burial chamber connected to the entrance by a short passage and covered with a cairn of stones, with entrances oriented southwest towards the midwinter sunset. The other sub-type is an annular ring cairn enclosing an apparently unroofed area with no formal access from the outside. The Clava Cairns inspired the fictional Craigh na Dun standing stones in the book and TV series Outlander. The famous “Cleft stone” that transports the main character Claire back in time can be found here at Clava Cairns.
- Culloden Battlefield - The Battle of Culloden occurred on 16 April 1746, near Inverness. A Jacobite army led by Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, ending the Jacobite rising of 1745. Culloden marks the site of the last major battle on British soil. The wild moor at Culloden is the resting place of 1,500 Jacobite and 50 Government soldiers who fought and died here. Today, visitors can walk along the battle lines and see the soldiers’ graves beside the memorial cairn in the center of the battlefield.
- Cawdor Castle - Cawdor Castle is located in the parish of Cawdor. It is built around a 15th-century tower house, with significant additions made in later centuries. Originally owned by the Calder family, it passed to the Campbells in the 16th century and is still owned by the Campbells today, serving as the home of the Dowager Countess Cawdor. The earliest documented date for the castle is 1454, when a license to fortify was granted to William Calder, 6th Thane of Cawdor. However, some parts of the 15th-century tower house or keep may predate that date. Architectural historians have dated the style of stonework in the oldest portion of the castle to approximately 1380. Along with its beautiful gardens, it is a must-see and popular stop for visitors.
- Culloden Viaduct - Designed by Murdoch Paterson, Chief Engineer of the Highland Railway, the bridge was constructed between 1893 and 1898 and remains in use today. The curved stone structure with concrete foundations is 1,800 feet long, making it the longest masonry railway viaduct in Scotland. It features 29 arches in total, with a wider central arch over the river and 14 on each side. It was built using local red sandstone from the Leanach Quarry on Culloden Moor and is a place of special architectural interest.
- Great Glen Distillery - Drumnadrochit is a village on the shores of Loch Ness, famously known as the home of the Loch Ness Monster. Drumnadrochit is filled with novelty shops where visitors can enjoy Scottish clan items and other Scottish staples. The Great Glen Gin Distillery, Scotland’s smallest distillery, offers world award-winning free gin tastings made from the waters of Loch Ness, providing a true taste of Nessie.
- The Singleton Distillery - Glen Ord Distillery was established in 1838 and is currently owned by the large brand Diageo. Glen Ord is the last remaining distillery on the Black Isle and is one of the few that still malts its own barley on site. Visitors can enjoy cheeseboards and a wide range of tastings in their newly refurbished facility, where some of their whiskies can only be sampled in certain regions of the world or right here at this distillery. For guests who do not prefer whisky, alternative refreshments are available.
