Clava Cairns - Begin the day with a visit to the remarkable Clava Cairns, a well-preserved Bronze Age cemetery located near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. These stone circles and burial chambers date back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age. Interestingly, archaeological excavations have revealed that the site was previously used for farming. Some of the early farm structures may have been repurposed into the burial site. Today, Clava Cairns is spread across two locations. The main site, Balnauran of Clava, is nestled in a serene, leafy area. It features three large burial cairns, each encircled by a stone circle. Two of these are passage cairns, with a central burial chamber accessible via a narrow passage. Between these passage cairns is a kerb cairn, which also has an enclosed central burial chamber. The cairns and stones are adorned with cup and ring markings, typical of the era, though their true meaning remains a mystery.
