The Silt and the Incense - In Hoi An’s alleys I unfold a map creased by sea wind: porches of overseas guilds—Hainan, Fuchien, Chaochow, Kwangtung, Shiuhing—line up, their plaques naming distant homes, a pressed palm that remembers scattered laughter. After the typhoon, floodwaters brought earth and silt, and the mud lies mute in the joints of old stone, like an unfinished story clinging to doorways and shoe soles. At roadside shrines, the Earth God bows and the God of Wealth smiles; fruits, incense, and paper offerings build fragile altars—people fold their hopes into these offerings and place them on modest thrones. Further on, temple eaves send up a steady column of smoke; incense burns strong, chants swell, and prayers knit together with the flame into warm waves that rise beneath the same sky. Homeland longing, recent silt, daily offerings, and devoted recitations walk this street side by side—each reflecting and blessing the other. I fold these fragments into my palm like a short song and carry it with me on the road.

The view from the bridge is a fairytale landscape - Fascinated by the colors, the lights of this beautiful old town. Every small business is neat and well furnished so many that you would always want to come in and visit it. The photos taken from the bridge, as boats with lanterns pass by, make the place seem like a place of fantasy. Definitely on the podium of the places Visas in Vietnam.

Massage yourself in La Charm de Hoi An - I was at La Charm hotel which is very good, with restaurant, pool, hammocks etc. I loved the massage that Hanh gave me, wonderful quality-price and fantastic pedicure tb. It is very hot in the city and you can not waste time being in the hotel.

There needs to be better management of this unesco world heritage site by government - I’m of the opinion the view that Hoi A was a little overrated. We’ve travelled extensively across other parts of the world, particularly to other unesco world heritage sites. My view of hoi an is as follows: 1. There are too many retail outlets selling the same products, much of which is cheap, mass produced touristy souvenirs. There’s a lot of rubbish one can purchased to take home, much of which is repetitive. There’s very little genuine arts and crafts reflective of Hoi An’s local community. Quite disappointed. 2. The buildings were old - many of which were also reproductions. There was little control by the heritage sections of the local government to carefully curate what was the original design and the newer reproductions. 3. Tourist guides need to be better trained to provide accurate historical background for Hoi An. Some of the ‘Japanese’ script on display was actually Chinese, suggesting some measure of inaccurate representations of foreign traders in Hoi An at that time.

Meh. - Too many hawkers and some very aggressive ones. I mean how many leather shops does one need? Massage, junk stores. Scams like lady draping a fruit basket on you for money or now the new one is timeshares. I don’t know if you need more than a day here. Go explore the rest of Vietnam instead. If you ask some their price on their counterfeit Northface “Goretex” they get downright nasty. Best to avoid.
