It was a vibrant international trading port and a hub for Japanese, Chinese, and Western trading ships during the 17th and 18th centuries. Prior to this era, it was also known as a Champa port, a notable site on the maritime Silk Road. Today, Hoi An Ancient Town stands as a remarkable example of a well-preserved traditional port city in Southeast Asia. The majority of the houses, dating from the 17th to the 19th century, feature traditional architecture and line the narrow main streets. Hoi An is a landmark showcasing a rich blend of cultural influences, with architecture reflecting Chinese, Japanese, and French trader influences. The town has retained its intangible cultural diversity and richness.
UNESCO designated Hoi An Ancient Town as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1999.
