Great Food Tour in Heraklion – Fantastic Gyros and Local Flavor - We booked this afternoon food tour during a cruise stop in Heraklion, and it ended up being one of our favorite experiences in Crete. Our guide, Marina, met our small group near the Venetian Harbor and immediately made the tour feel relaxed, informative, and personal. Our first stop was Hovoli for traditional Greek gyros—very different from the U.S. version. In Greece, gyros are wrapped in warm pita and always include a handful of fresh fries tucked inside, which adds great texture and warmth. It’s simple street food, but easily one of the tastiest bites of the day. From there, Marina led us through Heraklion’s backstreets and market area, stopping at landmarks like the Venetian Loggia and the Ottoman Sebil as she explained the city’s mix of Minoan, Venetian, and Ottoman history. The second stop, Arismari & Varsamo, served a generous spread of Cretan meze—stuffed grape leaves, zucchini balls, eggplant rolls, lamb meat pie, dakos, and more—along with a taste of local raki. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We ended at Phyllo Sophies with warm bougatsa, a flaky phyllo pastry filled with vanilla custard and dusted with cinnamon. A perfect finish. Overall, this tour offered great food, interesting history, and a wonderful guide. Highly recommended, especially for cruise passengers looking for a well-organized, delicious afternoon in Heraklion.

Food / History/ educational tour - Marina was Amazing, our food tour turned into a historic and educational tour of the city. Marina knows so many locals and the history of the area. I highly recommend Marina and her team if you're looking for some good food, education and culture in Crete.

Great food tour with Marina! - Incredible food! Marina gave us a wonderful food tour in Heraklion! Super delicious and an AMAZING amount of food! She also told us about the history of the area. She was very knowledgeable and fun to be with ! Private tours are better because you can customize them and it’s a more in-depth and personal experience. Highly recommend!

Definitely a great activity for an afternoon - This was a lovely way to learn about the history of the city and enjoy traditional food from family run restaurants. Alex was just brilliant he called me earlier in the morning to see if it was possible to rearrange our date as the tour we had originally booked on was very busy with cruise ship people and he wanted it to be less busy. We had our own private tour and when he found out what our interests were he made some adjustments to show us extra places. I can honestly say that he couldn’t have made it any better. We ended the trip with some extra impromptu drinks with him and Mateo and can’t recommend it enough.

Heraklion food tour - So much wonderful food, we got full pretty fast. Stopped at 3 restaurants for food. Too much was ordered at each place. And we got pressured to eat it.

Average at best.... - Knowing that Crete is renowned for its agriculture and food scene, we were very much looking forward to this tour. It was a nice enough day, but the tour & menu selections were limited and unremarkable. We typically enjoy the food tasting experiences as a great way to appreciate the culture and lifestyle of the place we are grateful to be visiting and an opportunity to discover places off the beaten path, loved by locals. In this particular instance, our guide's mother was scheduled for surgery that very day, so our guide was understandably distracted. We wish the family the best. Perhaps had she not been faced with that stressor, our tour would have been better. It wasn't a bad day, but there was nothing special about it.

Skip the Food Tour...Try Paraties Instead! - Marina, our host, was nice BUT I highly recommend just walking around on your own instead!! She brought us to a spot that served pork giro with French Fries poking out the side.....really?? Yes...really! The next stops had acceptable food, but we were s.tuffed into warm rooms, when, with preplanning, we might have been outside. After our "tour" we saw a restaurant called Paraties that listed Cretan Specialties on their menu, and they had an ocean view AND a patio......I'll spend my tour dollars there next visit!!
