• Church of Agios Minas - Agios Minas is the patron saint of Heraklion, Crete, and his feast day is celebrated on November 11, a public holiday in Heraklion. He became the patron saint during the Turkish occupation. Tradition recounts that on Easter 1826, while Christians were attending the Resurrection service, a group of Muslims planned a massacre, which was averted by the intervention of an old cavalry officer. This horseman resembled the Turkish leader, Ayan Aga, who calmed the situation and prevented the massacre. The Christians believed this mysterious horseman was a miraculous appearance of Saint Minas, rather than Ayan Aga.
