- Castello del Molo (Koules) - Initially fortified by the Arabs in the 9th or 10th centuries, the site later featured a tower called Castellum Comunis during the second Byzantine period. This tower was destroyed by an earthquake in 1303 but was subsequently repaired. In 1462, the Venetian Senate initiated a program to enhance Candia’s fortifications. By 1523, the Byzantine tower was dismantled, and construction of the Castello a Mare commenced, reaching completion in 1540. By 1630, the fort was equipped with 18 cannons on the ground floor and 25 cannons along the roof pathway. During the 21-year Siege of Candia, Ottoman forces easily subdued the fort’s defenses. The Ottomans captured the fort in 1669 after the Venetians surrendered the city, making only minor modifications such as adding battlements and embrasures. They constructed a small fort called Little Koules on the landward side, which was demolished in 1936.
- Dia - Dia is an uninhabited island located 6 miles north of Heraklion, known for its crystal-clear waters, stunning wild landscapes, and rich history. According to legend, it was once a monster created by Zeus to destroy the Cretans, but he transformed it into stone to save them. In the bay of Saint George, where anchoring occurs, there was an ancient Minoan port that was destroyed along with the Minoan Civilization. Occasionally, ancient ruins and artifacts can be found on the beach’s seabed. Today, a beautiful Christian church featuring Aegean architecture stands on the island. Dia is home to various wildlife species, including rabbits, kri-kri goats, hawks, and more!
