Elafonisi, located in the southwest of Crete, is renowned for its pink sand and shallow turquoise waters. This beach has consistently been ranked among the world’s most beautiful. The pink sand is created by the abundance of pink shells that are crushed by the sea. The area is part of the European Natura 2000 protection program. The water is generally shallow and safe for children. For a comfortable journey to and from Rethymno, several stops are made. Agia Sophia Cave is a site of archaeological, geological, and historical significance. The small church of Agia Sophia is situated at the cave’s entrance, which features numerous rows of large stalactites and stalagmites. In the traditional Cretan mountain village of Elos, visitors will find the island’s largest concentration of chestnut trees. During the stops, there will be opportunities to purchase food and drinks. Enjoy the journey through the lush Cretan landscape and a day at the exotic sandy beach of Elafonisi with its crystal-clear waters.
