Hidden Gem - My teenagers and I are history buffs, so we happy to find this. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and funny. Our tour was about an hour long and there were about a dozen people in our group. It was an amazing experience! We even got to sign their guest book...which is the outside wall of the building.

A fantastic stopping point on your travels - We booked the tour after looking for some lesser known/different things to do during our week long trip to Iceland in Feb, and following a recommendation from a colleague who has previously visited. We really enjoyed the tour and our guide was knowledgable, engaging and clearly passionate about the history and importance of the caves in Icelandic history. The caves themselves are interesting, in particular the bigger cave where it is possible to see rune carvings and what looks like an ancient crucifix carved into the wall. Our group was only 4 people, which made it feel like a private tour and meant we could ask lots of questions and learn loads. A definite must do if you are in the area!

Caves of Hella – history, mystery, and an excellent tasting - The Caves of Hella were a genuinely fascinating experience. The caves themselves are ancient, man-made, and surprisingly atmospheric, with visible tool marks and structural details that make their history feel very real. The guide did a great job explaining what’s known, what’s still debated, and why these caves matter—without exaggeration or filler. The experience is capped off with a tasting that’s far better than expected. The Icelandic whiskey tasting was thoughtfully presented, and the smoked goose tasting was a standout—rich, savory, and clearly tied to Icelandic tradition. It felt intentional and cultural, not like an add-on. A huge part of what made this tour exceptional was our guide, Stefán. He was incredibly knowledgeable, genuinely funny, and clearly passionate about the history. His delivery and humor made the information stick and completely elevated the experience rather than just narrating it. The visit was well paced, informative, and very accessible, with plenty of time to explore and ask questions. This is an excellent stop if you want something historically interesting that also gives you a real taste of Icelandic culture. Highly recommended for anyone driving the south coast and looking for something unique beyond the usual sights.

Fascinating stories with bit of humor. - This was a fun informative tour. The history and back stores of these caves was really interesting. Our tour guide told us a lot of stories and slid in plenty of humor along the way. Fascinating to imagine living in these caves in ancient times.

Not worth the time - It was a lot smaller than what I expected. I don’t think it was worth the time. There were some interesting stories but we could have done something better in that time
