From Waves to Wonders: A Surfer’s Journey Through Belize’s Caves and Ruins
Trading the surfboard for a tube, I embarked on a thrilling adventure in Belize, exploring ancient Mayan ruins and mystical caves. Join me as I recount a day filled with history, nature, and unexpected delights.
A Day of Adventure and Discovery
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing the perfect wave and exploring the vibrant cultures of Central America. But this time, I decided to trade my surfboard for a tube and embark on a different kind of adventure in Belize. The allure of exploring ancient Mayan ruins and floating through mystical caves was too tempting to resist. So, my wife and I found ourselves in Hattieville, ready to experience the Cave Tubing and Altun Ha Mayan Ruin Adventure.
Our day began with a bit of a surprise. Our guide, Antuane, arrived at our hotel in a van that looked like it had seen better days. But as any seasoned traveler knows, appearances can be deceiving. Antuane’s warm smile and friendly demeanor quickly put us at ease. After a quick switch to a more comfortable van at his family’s restaurant, we were on our way to our first stop: the Belize Zoo.
Floating Through History
The Belize Zoo was an unexpected but delightful addition to our itinerary. As we strolled through the lush grounds, Antuane shared fascinating tidbits about the native wildlife. The harpy eagle, with its majestic presence, was a particular highlight. But soon, it was time to move on to the main event: cave tubing.
Arriving at the Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve, we were greeted by the sounds of the jungle and the promise of adventure. Antuane’s arrangement with the locals meant we didn’t have to lug our tubes through the forest, allowing us to fully enjoy the hike to the launch point. As we floated through the cool, dark waters of the cave system, Antuane’s knowledge of the formations and history added depth to the experience. The provided headlamps were a bit dim, but our small flashlights came in handy, illuminating the intricate details of the cave walls.
Majestic Altun Ha
After a delicious lunch at Antuane’s family’s restaurant, complete with local flavors and the company of playful puppies, we set off for Altun Ha. The ancient Mayan city was nearly deserted, offering us a rare opportunity to explore its grandeur in peace. Climbing the steep steps of the main temple was a challenge, but the view from the top was worth every effort. Antuane’s guidance was invaluable, especially since the museum maps were back at the entrance.
As the day came to a close, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey we had just experienced. From the depths of the caves to the heights of the temples, Belize had offered us a glimpse into its rich history and natural beauty. And while I may have traded the ocean waves for a day, the adventure was every bit as exhilarating. If you’re ever in Belize, I highly recommend taking the plunge into this unique and unforgettable experience.
